Aim

The aim of this seminar is to provide attendees with the underpinning knowledge and uniformity in training required to understand the role and responsibilities of the Appointed Person, as defined in BS 7121 Part 1 and Part 3.

Prerequisites

Attendees must be fluent in written and spoken English and be able to carry out basic mathematical calculations using a calculator.
Attendees’ dress code for practical demonstrations must conform to minimum PPE requirements; smart/casual dress is suitable for classroom sessions.
Positive attitude and a willingness to learn.
Attendees must bring their own laptop.

Duration

Total seminar duration is six days.

Days 1–5:
Classroom-based tutorials, presentations, demonstrations, discussions and interactive learning. Sessions may include fieldwork and practical demonstrations depending on location.

Day 6:
Classroom-based written questionnaire and completion of a lift plan scenario, including scale drawings, method statement, risk assessment, sequence of operations and brief.

Objectives

Following successful completion of the seminar, attendees should be able to identify and implement safe systems of work for lifting operations in accordance with LOLER and BS 7121 (series).

Attendees should be able to:

Demonstrate a suitable level of knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, industry best practice and technical requirements for the management and supervision of safe lifting operations
Identify and select a suitable crane and configuration for the lifting operation
Identify and select suitable lifting accessories and methods of attachment
Produce scale drawings that clearly show the crane position and site layout
Produce a clear and effective method statement and risk assessment
Categorise lifting operations as standard, complex or critical
Understand the requirements for the selection and duties of personnel and key interfaces
Implement clear communication strategies

Target Audience and Suitability

This seminar is intended for those who are required to plan and/or oversee the safe execution of lifting operations using one or more types of lifting equipment.

Considerable knowledge and experience of working within lifting operations and/or a health and safety environment is strongly recommended but is not an essential prerequisite for attending the seminar.

Examination and Certificates

Upon successful completion of the written tasks, attendees will be issued with a Certificate of Completion.

Attendees who are unable to successfully complete the written task will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

It is the employer’s responsibility to ensure that all necessary regulatory requirements and obligations have been satisfied when appointing a person to the role. Appointment is based on prior learning and qualifications, skill level and competency demonstrated within the work environment.
