MEET ISAAC BLANKSON: TAKORADI SERVICE PLANNER AT PASICO GHANA!

Isaac has worked at Pasico Ghana, a subsidiary company of Paterson Simons, for 5 years. Initially hired as a translator proficient in French and English, he provided valuable language support during Grove training sessions organized for customers in Ghana, Burkina Faso, and Cote d’Ivoire.

In early 2018, Isaac took on the role of Assistant Planner and continued serving as a French Translator. Recognizing his exceptional skills and commitment, he was promoted to the position of Takoradi Service Planner in October 2021, a role he currently holds.

Isaac’s contributions have been instrumental, particularly in his capacity as a French/English translator. His linguistic expertise has significantly aided our customers and enriched the training sessions.

‘’I was surprised by the wide variety of lifting equipment available on the market, but more importantly by the abilities of our engineers to work on them even some that fall out of our scope of work. The ambiance at work in the Takoradi team is so friendly. My colleagues are just incredible. The work environment here feels like an “Academy” where you always get something new to learn. I really love planning, regardless of the many challenges associated with it. It gives you the sense of satisfaction when you have been able to put all the pieces together to get a job completed. It also helps to improve team work skills which is key to succeed in a company. Advice I would give to young engineers/technicians who are wanting to progress in their role at Paterson Simons is to focus on learning – individually and from others. Learn to work with others. From here, success will follow.’’  – Isaac Blankson, Takoradi Service Planner at Pasico Ghana

New lifting equipment deliveries in Ghana

ABL and Manitou

Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) manufacturer’s of the popular Club Beer brand took delivery of two Manitou MI-X40D industrial forklifts. They have been loyal customers for the past 3 years and remain impressed with the quality of the Manitou forklifts we’ve supplied. Pasico Ghana Ltd. is currently discussing a service contract with ABL.

DSM Logistics & Terberg

DSM Logistics is another loyal customer of Pasico Ghana Ltd., and so far have leased a total of seven Terberg Yard Tractors (six 4×2 units and one 4×4 unit). Our most recent delivery was for two YT182 (4×2) Terberg yard tractors. DSM provides comprehensive logistics solutions to GPHA, MPS and APMT within Tema Port, Ghana.

GPHA & TEC Gondolas

We were thrilled last month to supply our very first telescopic gondola cage. GPHA bought two TEC BA-323T gondolas and took delivery in December, 2016. GPHA uses gondolas to assist with lashing and de-lashing containers on vessels. The gondolas ensures workers are protected from falling as well as falling objects when lashing and delashing containers in the port. Useful cages help workers carry hand tools safely to height.

Thank you to our hard-working sales teams and loyal customers for making these successful deliveries possible.

Grove Crane Rebuild

Many customers opt to rebuild rather than re-purchase, as it is an economical alternative to extend a crane’s life. Pasico Ghana Ltd.’s crane engineers completely rebuild the crane, from the bare frame to a new paint job.  Our teams have the skills and facilities to rebuild mobile hydraulic and lattice boom crawler cranes.

In 2014 Manitowoc certified Pasico Ghana Ltd. as an official encore partner. Through the EnCORE partner program, the Paterson Simons subsidiary Pasico Ghana Ltd.  now offers a fully certified repair and refurbishment service for Manitowoc crawler cranes, Grove mobile cranes and National Crane boom trucks in Ghana.

Rugged terrain, tough working environments and demanding lifts means that cranes in Africa must endure more than most. EnCORE is the perfect solution for crane owners looking to extend the life of their cranes, rather than replace them.

The process begins with the machine being completely disassembled right down to its frame. It is then rebuilt with OEM new or remanufactured components. The Pasico Ghana Ltd. parts department is intimately involved with the process and sources an extensive selection of remanufactured parts through Manitowoc’s EnCORE program. All systems are updated, and new electrical harnesses, instruments, drive lines, hydraulic components and hoses are installed. Two coats of fresh paint are applied, new decals are applied, and, finally, all systems are tested.

Perseus Mining approached Pasico Ghana Ltd. to assess a Grove GMK and the likelihood of a rebuild.

On viewing and testing the old machine the engineering team recommended re-purchase, as the crane was very old, and the team felt that certain parts would keep failing – which would lead tp great cost in the long run.
Perseus nonetheless requested that the Pasico Ghana Ltd. team proceed with the rebuild. The crane was then moved from their site in Ayanfuri into a workshop next to the Pasico Takoradi office for work to begin.

Doing an assessment on a crane whose majority functions are no longer working was a challenge as the team could not thoroughly test the crane. Eventually a full picture of the crane’s state emerged and over a period of a couple of months the process of procuring new parts, disassembling and reassembling the machine proceeded.

The GMK is now back on site at Perseus and the last we heard it is back on duty.

GPHA JCB Teletruk’s Biggest Customer in the World

GPHA (Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority) and Pasico Ghana Ltd.  are a major success story in the Ports sector for JCB Teletruks; in fact GPHA buy more Teletruks than any other JCB customer in the world. The story of how Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority (GPHA) came to embrace the JCB Teletruk is an interesting one and starts as far back as 1999 when some GPHA officials saw the machine at the CeMAT materials handling exhibition in Germany and noticed its unique abilities would lend themselves perfectly to port applications. By 2002 the JCB dealer in Ghana, Pasico had worked together to meet the specifications for the port and deliver the first machine. The Teletruk proved itself to be the perfect option for container unstuffing as well as handling loose and bulk materials and, according the GPHA, who today operate over 60 machines in Tema and Takoradi harbours ‘it makes a direct impact on saving life and limb with its fantastic clear forward vision’. Today this is arguably the biggest single operation in any port in the world. Stephen Owiah, Tema Port Mechanical Engineer, concludes that it would be difficult for GPHA to depart from the use of the machines now or in the future “the machines have low maintenance and low maintenance costs. The productivity of the Teletruk is unmatched by any other forklift in that capacity.” Africa is fast becoming the 2nd largest region for JCB Teletruks thanks to enterprising customers and a forward-thinking dealer.

Teletruks have proven to be a superb option for container unstuffing, as not only can they drive into the container but can easily handle loose and bulk materials. As GPHA comments “The Teletruk makes a direct impact on saving life and limb with its fantastic clear forward vision especially when working in containers.” Thanks to the innovative outlook of GPHA the Teletruk has fast become a popular option in both Tema and Takoradi harbours, and today GPHA operates over 60 Teletruks.

The long reach, manoeuvrability and ability to drive into a standard ISO container make the JCB Teletruk ideal for unloading diverse materials that would in the past often need to be manually handled. The Teletruk has a well reported ability to load trailers from a single side and in West Africa this translates into an ability to reach over and top load high sided vehicles. Add to this the Teletruk’s renowned reliability and a highly experienced level of local service support and it is easy to see why GPHA operates arguably the largest fleet of TLTs in the world.

In 2015 GPHA made a further order for 20 units of the JCB TLT 35D. Stephen Owiah, Port Mechanical Engineer at GPHA concludes, “The Teletruks have low maintenance and maintenance costs. Productivity of Teletruks at GPHA is unmatched by any other forklift in that capacity. In fact it will be difficult for GPHA, Tema Port to depart from the use the Teletruks now or in future.”
