NIGERIA CLINCH HISTORIC 10TH WAFCON TITLE WITH STUNNING COMEBACK AGAINST MOROCCO

NIGERIA PRODUCED A SENSATIONAL SECOND-HALF COMEBACK TO BEAT HOSTS MOROCCO 3-2 AND SEAL A RECORD-EXTENDING 10TH WOMEN’S AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS TITLE

Nigeria have secured a record 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title after mounting a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in Rabat.

Playing in front of a home crowd at the Olympic Stadium, the Atlas Lionesses took a commanding 2-0 lead before half-time with goals from Ghizlane Chebbak, who curled in a brilliant opener, and Sanaa Mssoudy, whose scuffed effort found the net.

But the Super Falcons roared back after the break. Esther Okoronkwo sparked the revival, converting a penalty in the 64th minute after a handball by Nouhaila Benzina.

Okoronkwo then turned provider, breaking into the box and setting up Folamide Ijamilusi to slot home the equaliser in the 71st minute. With just two minutes left on the clock, Okoronkwo again turned creator, squaring for substitute Jennifer Echegini to score the decisive goal and seal Nigeria’s record-extending triumph.

POWERING PROGRESS: FLEXIBLE PATHWAYS TO ZERO EMISSIONS IN BREAKBULK AND PROJECT CARGO

POWERING PROGRESS: FLEXIBLE PATHWAYS TO ZERO EMISSIONS IN BREAKBULK AND PROJECT CARGO

The road to zero tailpipe emissions looks different for every terminal operator. With Konecranes, you can move toward electrification at a pace that suits your operations, thanks to a wide range of power options across its port equipment portfolio.

While electrification is the clear direction for ports globally, breakbulk and project cargo operators often face unique challenges. Some are ready to transition to fully electric equipment, while others need a step-by-step approach that accommodates practical constraints.

Konecranes addresses this reality with flexible power solutions across its lift trucks, mobile harbour cranes, and other equipment. Rather than a one-size-fits-all model, the company partners with customers to understand their needs and offer tailored options – making lower-emission operations more achievable, regardless of the starting point.

Versatile Power Options for Mobile Harbour Cranes
For more than 70 years, Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes have supported terminal operations worldwide. The latest Generation 6 models offer a modular drive concept with options including onboard hybrid systems, external power supplies, or fully electric drives that integrate shore power and lithium-ion battery technology.

Operators with stable grid access are seeing real emission reductions. A prime example is Eimskip, the Icelandic maritime logistics provider, which now operates 11 Konecranes Gottwald cranes. Most of the fleet runs on electricity, and the investment in external power supplies paid for itself within just three years.

DID YOU KNOW THAT WEST AFRICA'S REMARKABLE GOLD ABUNDANCE IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN ITS ANCIENT GEOLOGICAL HISTORY?

DID YOU KNOW THAT WEST AFRICA’S REMARKABLE GOLD ABUNDANCE IS DEEPLY ROOTED IN ITS ANCIENT GEOLOGICAL HISTORY?

Gold has been a defining element in West Africa’s development for centuries. It supported the emergence of influential empires, shaped trans-Saharan trade networks, and continues to play a significant role in the region’s contemporary economies. Its presence offers a lens through which to understand both the historical and ongoing dynamics of West Africa.

The golden legacy of West Africa is no accident. Beneath its soil lies the West African Craton – a remarkably stable geological formation over two billion years old. Within this craton sits the Man Shield, stretching across countries like Ghana, Mali, and Burkina Faso. It’s here that the Birimian rocks, born from ancient volcanic arcs and transformed during the Eburnean orogeny, created the ideal conditions for gold mineralisation.

In medieval times, this natural wealth gave rise to the empires of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai, whose influence spanned trade, culture, and scholarship. Gold, carried across the trans-Saharan trade routes, was exchanged for salt and other commodities, linking West Africa to the Mediterranean world. Cities like Timbuktu and Djenné became renowned centres of commerce and learning.

Today, the story continues. Ghana – nicknamed the “Gold Coast” – and Mali remain leading gold producers in Africa, with major mining operations and artisanal activities alike. Companies such as AngloGold Ashanti and Gold Fields Ltd. maintain a strong presence, particularly in Ghana’s Ashanti and Western regions.

Yet while gold continues to bring economic opportunity, it also raises pressing questions around sustainability, equity, and governance. Exploring the geological roots and historical context of West Africa’s gold wealth offers valuable insight into its enduring impact on the region and the world.

WHITEPAPER: THE FUTURE OF THE PORT INDUSTRY IS ELECTRIC

WHITEPAPER: THE FUTURE OF THE PORT INDUSTRY IS ELECTRIC

The drive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions – spurred by regulations from the United Nations, European Union, and U.S. environmental legislation – has accelerated the global shift towards electric transportation over the past decade. Konecranes is firmly committed to making fully electric versions of its entire product portfolio available by 2026. Under its Ecolifting™ initiative, Konecranes helps customers take systematic steps towards reducing CO2 emissions per container move. Central to this effort is the broader use of (renewable) electricity over fossil fuels, both in Konecranes’ own operations and in powering the lifting equipment it produces.

Yet, the journey to electrification requires practical, phased progress. Transitioning to electric equipment often entails infrastructure upgrades and higher upfront investments, balanced by long-term gains in efficiency and significant reductions in emissions. Today, eco-efficient solutions already represent 60% of Konecranes’ sales, reinforcing the company’s support for the industry’s environmental targets and alignment with global climate commitments such as the Paris Agreement.

As electricity demand continues to rise, pressure on the power grid is increasing, sometimes outpacing infrastructure capacity. This challenge underscores the value of strategies such as peak shaving to manage and optimise electricity consumption during periods of high demand. Replacing fossil fuel-powered port equipment with electric alternatives offers a tangible path to reducing greenhouse gas emissions—particularly as rapid technological advances continue to enhance the viability and efficiency of electric solutions.

BloombergNEF forecasts that electric vehicles will account for 30% of global new car sales by 2030, underscoring the broader shift towards electrification across transport and industry. Anticipating the growing demands from port authorities and governments for more sustainable operations, Konecranes was an early adopter of battery-electric drive systems for large fleets operating in active terminal environments. This technology is now successfully in use at several major international container terminals.
