DID YOU KNOW LAKE VOLTA IN GHANA IS ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST MAN-MADE BODIES OF WATER IN THE WORLD?
It was created in the mid-1960s with the construction of the Akosombo Dam on the Volta River. The lake plays a crucial role in generating electricity, providing inland transport, and supporting irrigation and fishing.
In the image above, you can see the distinct contrast between the lush forests of the Ashanti region in the southeast and the more arid lowland savannah to the north. Road networks connect to Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest city with a population of around 660,000. Southeast of Kumasi lies Lake Bosumtwi, a circular crater lake formed by a meteorite impact – one of only 18 confirmed impact craters in Africa.
This image was taken on 12 February 2003 by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) aboard Envisat. It offers a resolution of 300 meters and covers an area of 450 km by 670 km.

OPTIMISE YOUR FUEL SAVINGS WITH KONECRANES AUTO ENGINE SHUTDOWN!
Save Fuel with Konecranes Auto Engine Shutdown:
Konecranes Intelligent Electronic Machine Control (EMC) system continuously monitors key components and functions of your lift truck, offering programmable settings tailored to your specific needs. It integrates seamlessly with Konecranes’ TRUCONNECT Remote Monitoring and reporting system.
As part of the EMC Master system, the Auto Engine Shutdown is an optional feature that helps reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, while also extending the time between engine maintenance intervals.
This feature automatically shuts down the engine when the lift truck idles for an extended period and restarts it as needed. When the truck is in neutral and the brake is released, the “start-stop” mode is activated, shutting off the engine. To restart, simply engage the gear or use the brake. If stationary power is needed for lifting, using the lever or joystick will restart the engine. Learn more from Konecranes here.
Engine Shutdown Extra Function: Maximise Fuel Savings
Take your fuel efficiency even further with Konecranes’ Engine Shutdown Extra Function.
Building on the auto start-stop feature, this enhancement allows you to shut down your engine based on key factors like:
– Engine temperature (high/low)
– Oil pressure
How It Works:
When activated, the system monitors temperature and pressure, alerting the operator via a pop-up. The operator can then choose to:
– Continue operations
– Shut down the engine
This proactive approach supports longer engine life, reduced downtime, streamlined operations, and lower emissions.
Compatibility:
The Engine Shutdown Extra Function is available on all Konecranes Generation C forklifts and empty container handlers with the MD4 master display.

PSAL GROUP ACHIEVES KEY MILESTONE ON PATH TO ISO45001 CERTIFICATION
ISO 45001 is an international standard that specifies requirements for an occupational health and safety (OH&S) management system. It provides a framework for organisations to manage risks and improve OH&S performance.
We have successfully completed Stage 1 of the audit process, conducted by SGS, with outstanding results.
The Stage 1 audit, which took place on August 8th and 9th, 2024, is a critical step where the certification body (CB) evaluates an organization’s readiness for the full audit. This involves confirming that all necessary processes, procedures, and resources are in place. We are pleased to report that only two minor non-conformances were identified, both of which have been swiftly addressed.
With this successful outcome, the PSAL Group is now qualified to proceed to Stage 2 of the audit process. The upcoming audit will focus primarily on fieldwork assessments and records, marking the final step towards achieving ISO45001 certification.
We encourage all teams and subsidiaries to continue their support and cooperation as we approach this crucial phase.
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all staff for their contribution.
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF INSPECTORS & TRAIN THE TRAINER TRAINING FOR PASICO GHANA
Recently our Pasico Ghana CIT Inspectors and Engineers underwent intensive training.(Pasico Ghana is a subsidiary of Paterson Simons). This was both Inspectors training and Train the Trainer (TTT) teachers training.
Inspectors Training: Through CICB we provided dedicated training for individuals involved in the inspection of equipment for 3rd party certification purposes. The content of this training is focused on best practices for inspection, regulatory requirements, reporting and more.
The program included detailed modules on equipment inspection protocols, safety standards, and practical exercises to reinforce learning. This is a special, detailed training tailored specifically for our engineers.
TTT Training: The Train the Trainer training is aimed at providing dedicated training for individuals involved in providing equipment Operator training. The content of training is focused on best practices for operating equipment, roles of responsibility, pre-start checks, and more. The training has specific modules for each type of equipment.
Both the TTT and the Inspections training was for all the types of equipment that we sell:
- Forklifts, Telehandlers, Reach stackers
- Overhead Cranes, Rubber Tyre Gantries, Ship To Shore Cranes and Mobile Harbour Cranes
- Mobile, Crawler and Truck Mounted Cranes both for AT and RT
- Rigging gear incl. below the hook lifting devices and personnel lifting systems
- Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, Work at Height and Scaffolding.
Our staff are trained and competent to do both statutory inspections for 3rd party Certification and provide user/Operator training to industry regulations, standards and best practice.
This detailed training forms part of our commitment to ensuring our teams are well-prepared and compliant with the latest industry requirements.
As they successfully concluded the training, the trainees expressed enthusiasm about applying their enhanced knowledge and skills in their daily responsibilities. Their completion marks another milestone in the company’s ongoing efforts to uphold safety and operational excellence in the workplace. Our Congratulations to the participants and special thanks to CICB trainer Jerry Longtin!
Paterson Simons’ CIT division has a sizeable team of excellent, capable and certified inspectors. We can support your needs throughout the West & Central African regions. The training is part of a regular cycle we undertake every three years to maintain high standards across our engineering teams.

PATERSON SIMONS SUCCESSFULL TRAINING, COMMISSIONING, AND OFFLOADING OF FOUR NEW KONECRANES 16WA RTGS AT BENIN TERMINAL S.A. – COTONOU
Our engineers from Paterson Simons in Togo, together with Konecranes engineers, managed the offloading process of the four new Konecranes 16WA RTGs.
The French theoretical and practical training by Paterson Simons was held from March 25 to April 19, 2024, focusing on the mechanical and electrical maintenance of RTGs and troubleshooting.
Konecranes RTG cranes are engineered for space-efficient container terminals demanding superior container handling performance. They can be configured to span up to eight container rows plus a truck lane, and can stack containers up to 1-over-6 high, with a lifting capacity under the spreader of up to 65 tons. These cranes are equipped with the latest Core of Lifting components, including gear reducers, motors, and controls. They offer versatile power options, including diesel, hybrid, fully-electric, or battery power. Additionally, they feature Active Load Control to eliminate container sway and a comprehensive range of Smart Features.
Thanks to an investment of 142 billion FCFA (216 million euros) since 2013 by Benin Terminal, the container terminal at the port of Cotonou has transformed into a regional logistics hub for Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Nigeria. As a key player in the country’s supply chain, Benin Terminal employs 419 Beninese and has implemented a subcontracting policy that creates a thousand indirect jobs.
We extend our gratitude to Komi Mouzou and Tanei Koboyoda from Paterson Simons, and to Tuomas Vainio and Jani Liedes from Konecranes, as well as all teams involved in this highly successful project!
And our congratulations to the training participants:
