HARNESSING TECHNOLOGY: REMOTE ACCESS ENHANCEMENTS FOR KONECRANES LIFTTRUCKS
This innovative remote access capability allows us to remotely update the program of Konecranes Liftrucks machines from any location. It facilitates remote troubleshooting of critical issues and enables software upgrades if customers wish to add options that are only achievable through software updates.
Utilising this remote system, we can connect from our laptops using IQANrun software, typically employed for updating machine programs, whether from our office in the UK or elsewhere. This connection is established through the 4G TruConnect modem installed in the Liftrucks, using a SIM card registered to the local operator’s service. The strength of the 4G mobile signal at the terminal is crucial for maintaining a stable remote connection. While 3G service may suffice for certain remote access tasks, a robust 4G signal is imperative for upgrading the entire machine software.
This cutting-edge technology not only enables seamless communication with the Master Display unit (MD4) in Konecranes Lifttrucks machines but also empowers us to conduct remote updates and troubleshooting from any location.
With the ability to connect and update machine programs using IQANrun software, we are poised to be part of a new way forward regarding the way lift truck maintenance and upgrades are managed. We remain dedicated to staying at the forefront of technological advancements to better serve our valued clients.

THE TRUE SIZE OF AFRICA: DID YOU KNOW THAT AFRICA IS BIGGER THAN IT LOOKS ON MOST MAPS OF THE WORLD?
Africa, the second-largest continent, covers 30.37 million square kilometres and can fit the United States, China, India, and most of Europe within its boundaries. However, the Mercator projection makes Greenland appear similar in size to Africa, despite being much smaller.
This distortion affects our perception of Africa’s importance and scale.
Using alternative map projections, such as the Gall-Peters projection, which accurately represents the relative sizes of landmasses, can help us better appreciate Africa’s true size and significance!

APPOINTED PERSON TRAINING AT PASICO GHANA’S TRAINING CENTRE IN TEMA
A busy lifting site may cover a wide area and involve third parties and vehicles directly connected with the lift or otherwise working around the designated area.
Risk is everywhere. Strong planning is essential to reduce risk involving many moving parts.
The UK LOLER legislation puts a duty on employers to have an Appointed Person [AP] to take responsibility for all aspects of the lift including making risk assessments, selection of cranes and accessories, planning and supervising the lift. The US ASME regulations have a similar Lift Planner role.
Competence is a key component of the qualifications of the role which is often based on experience but this needs to be assessed and to achieve this Pasico Ghana’s CIT Division recently hosted Appointed Person training at our training facility in Tema.
This training comprising both theoretical and practical components, catered to participants from various companies, CIT Inspectors, and a private student.
Designed to qualify individuals for the highest position in lifting, graduates of this course are titled as ‘Appointed Persons’ or ‘Lift Directors’.
The training comprehensively covered legislation including LOLER, PUWER, and HASAWA, along with codes of practice such as BS7121. Participants also learned about roles and responsibilities in lifting operations, crane appreciation, duty charts, crane terminology, documentation, and certification for lifting equipment. Crane stability and ground conditions, as well as understanding Rated Capacity and Safe Working Loads, were emphasised. Additionally, the training covered lifting accessories, sling techniques, sling angles, communication protocols, and the essential aspects of planning a lifting operation and writing a risk assessment.
We extend our congratulations to the successful participants: Livingstone Korley, Sydney Tagoe, John Adzigbo, Egan Benson Adjei, Alex Akorli, Vincent Blewusi Agbavitor, Joseph Owusu, Emilio Samson, Nana Fening, Albert Crentsil, Augustine Korankye, and Abudu Yussif.
And thank you to trainer Andrew Packham!
PATERSON SIMONS SUCCESSFUL BESPOKE TRAINING FOR A MINING CUSTOMER WHO RECEIVED THEIR FIRST MODERN PINNED BOOM ALL TERRAIN CRANE – THE GROVE GMK6300-1!
The customer’s operators had experience with fixed lattice boom crawler cranes and full power boom rough terrain cranes but were not familiar with the multiple configurations of a pinned boom, multiple hook blocks and counterweight configurations of a modern all terrain crane.
To facilitate their transition to the new equipment, Paterson Simons provided an experienced crane operator to collaborate with the client’s team during an extended handover period. This initiative aimed to cultivate safe mobilisation practices encompassing on and off-road driving techniques, meticulous load planning, and precise rigging and lifting protocols.
Based on our experience, the most effective approach to establishing best practices involves having a trainer who actively participates in the daily operations of mobile cranes deliver knowledge transfer, yielding consistent results that can be replicated.
The initial phase of the training involved driving the crane 380km from port to mine including planning of escorting arrangements on challenging West African roads and traffic conditions.

Over a span of six weeks, the trainer systematically guided the operators through successive setups and operations of the crane, gradually increasing lifting capacities to eventually run cover all of the configurations of the crane. He reported a high level of engagement and enthusiasm among the trainees, culminating in the formation of a cohesive and proficient team by the program’s conclusion.

As a responsible business Paterson Simons recognise that All Terrain cranes can involve a step up for operators used to equipment which is simple to set up and operate and we can offer and deliver bespoke training packages on request.
This training is over and above what we would usually deliver either as operator familiarisation on a new machine or as part of a classroom based certification course.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this bespoke training program a success!
